A Question of Trust – About the Author

Victor Canning was a famous English writer of novels and thrillers. His thrillers are famous for their romance, mystery and unexpected and highly thrilling endings. In 1965, he began a series of four books that featured a private detective named Rex Carver. 

Short Summary of A Question of Trust

This is a story of two burglars who want to rob the same safe. The name of the first burglar is Horace Danby He goes to rob a safe. There he meets a young lady who pretends herself to be the wife of the owner of the house. But in reality, she is also a burglar. Horace opens the safe for her. He leaves his fingerprints all over the room. The lady enjoys jewels and Horace Danby is arrested by the police. He gets a term in prison. Now he is the assistant librarian in prison. 

Summary of A Question of Trust in English

Horace Danby was generally considered to be a good and respectable citizen. He was a fifty year old bachelor. He lived with a housekeeper. He was an expert lock maker. However, he was not completely honest. He had been to prison, fifteen years ago for stealing jewels. He had no desire to become honest. He was careful lest he should run into difficulties for his dishonesty.

Horace Danby hated prison. He was heartily fond of rare and expensive books. He used to commit one theft a year on an average. The stolen money lasted for the year. He chose the house at Shotover Grange to commit his next burglary. He studied the design of the house carefully for a fortnight. He found that the family had gone to London and the servants to the movie. He broke into the house one afternoon. He hoped to get fifteen thousand pounds worth of jewels from the safe. The jewellery would enable him to buy the books he wanted. He put on his gloves. He took the key from its usual place. He pacified the pet dog by addressing it with love. He reached the safe, placed in the drawing room behind a painting. He was suffering from hay fever. The smell of the flowers at the table made him sneeze.

Just then, a young beautiful woman in red clothes entered the house. She posed to be the mistress of the house. She suggested him that he should see a doctor if he was serious about his work. His sneezing had brought her down from the top of the house. She thanked her stars that she had returned in time not expecting to see a burglar in the house. To avoid trouble, Horace started conversing with her in a pleasant manner. He replied that he too had not expected to find her there. She got furious when he asked her to let him go. She threatened to get him arrested. The thought of going to prison made Horace shudder. He pledged that he would never repeat such kind of thing if he was let off.

The woman took a cigarette from a silver box. Horace took off his gloves and held his lighter towards her. She promised to let him go if he did something for her. Horace readily consented to the proposal. The woman said that she had come to take her jewels as she had to attend a party. She had forgotten the numbers to open the safe. She bade Horace to open it. She would get the safe repaired. Horace broke the safe open and gave her the jewels. Then, he was allowed to go.

Horace’s fingerprints were found on the safe. He was arrested for the jewel robbery on the third day. The house lady was an aged woman of sixty. He realised that he was befooled by a lady who was also a thief.

होरेस डेनबी एक अच्छे इंसान थे। वह पचास साल का था लेकिन फिर भी अविवाहित था। होरेस डेंबी एक ताला बनाने वाला था। वह एक बहुत ही सफल व्यवसायी थे। उनकी सहायता के लिए उनके दो सहायक थे। अच्छा और सम्मानित होने के नाते, लेकिन वह पूरी तरह से ईमानदार नहीं था। वह दुर्लभ और महंगी किताबों के शौकीन थे। उन्हें किसी भी कीमत पर खरीदा। इसके लिए उसने साल में केवल एक बार तिजोरी लूटी। उन्होंने इन किताबों को एक एजेंट के माध्यम से गुप्त रूप से खरीदा। चोरी करने से पहले, उन्होंने योजना को अच्छी तरह से पूरा किया। इस बार उन्होंने दो सप्ताह के लिए शोओवर ग्रेंज में घर का निरीक्षण किया था। उन्होंने उस घर के बारे में मिनट की चीजों का भी अध्ययन किया।

परिवार अब लंदन में था। घर के दो केयरटेकर नौकर फिल्मों में चले गए थे। वह बगीचे की दीवार के पीछे से कूद गया और घर के अंदर आ गया। उसने रसोई के दरवाजे के हुक से चाबी ली थी। फिर, उसने दस्ताने पहने। उसने दरवाजा खोला। वह किसी भी उंगलियों के निशान छोड़ने के लिए बहुत सावधान था। मेज पर फूलों की एक कलश थी। फूलों की खुशबू ने उसकी नाक में गुदगुदी कर दी। वह बार-बार छींकता है, उसने एक युवा महिला की आवाज सुनी। वह उस घर के मालिक की पत्नी होने का दिखावा करती है। उसने उसे बताया कि वह अचानक वहां आई थी क्योंकि वह चाहती थी कि उसके गहने उन्हें रात में पार्टी में पहने।

डेनबी ने महिला से अनुरोध किया कि वह उसे घर जाने दे। उसने उसे गहने खोलने के लिए कहा क्योंकि उसे गहने की जरूरत थी लेकिन वह संख्या भूल गई थी। डेनबी ने स्वेच्छा से दस्ताने के बिना तिजोरी खोली। युवती को गहने मिले। होरेस डेंबी खुशी से चले गए क्योंकि वह जेल जाने से बच गए थे। तीसरे दिन, एक पुलिसकर्मी ने उसे शॉटओवर ग्रेंज में गहना लूट के लिए गिरफ्तार किया था।
