About the Author 

Vikram Seth CBE is an Indian novelist and poet.  He attended exclusive Indian schools and then graduated from Corpus Christi College, Oxford (B.A., 1975). He received a master’s degree in economics from Stanford University in the U.S. in 1978 and later studied at Nanjing University in China.

Short Summary of Kathmandu

This story tells us about the author’s visit to the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu. We see that he was coming from China to visit India via hitchhiking. In this hitchhiking, he crosses Tibet and Nepal. Thus, this story gives us an account of his experience in Kathmandu. This travelogue gives an insight on his trip to the city and what he feels about it. On his trip to Kathmandu, Vikram visits the two most popular temples of the city. One is the Pashupatinath temple and the other is Baudhnath Stupa. He notices the difference between the two temples and the atmosphere surrounding them. Thus, through Kathmandu summary, we travel to the city without actually going there, through Vikram’s magical words.

Summary in English

Vikram Seth describes his visit to the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu through this excerpt from his book ‘Heaven Lake’. During his trip, he visits two temples where notice stark differences between them. One temple was a pilgrimage for Hindus, the Pashupatinath temple.

After that, there was the Baudhnath temple which is for the Buddhists. He notices that they restricted the entry at the Pashupatinath temple to only Hindus. Thus, there was quite a chaos amongst the tourists, priests and the pilgrims. To top it all, people were polluting the River Bagmati by washing clothes in it, bathing in it and throwing away dry flowers in it.

After that, he went to Baudhnath temple. He saw that the scenario here was completely different from what he saw at the Pashupatinath temple. This Buddhist temple had a huge dome which is white in colour. The place was very calm and serene. Outside the temple, there was a Tibetan market and people were selling bags, clothes, ornaments and more.

He notices the numerous things Kathmandu offers from religious places to many tourist destinations. Moreover, it also has various shops of antiques, cameras, cosmetics, chocolates and more. Nonetheless, it is also a very noisy city from the car horns to the music and vendors. He enjoyed having a marzipan bar, corn, coca-cola in the city. After that, he also read love stories, comics and Reader’s Digest books.

On returning to Delhi, he thought of taking an adventurous route which comprises of a bus or train journey and then a boat ride, but he dropped the idea for that would have been too tiring. Thus, he booked a flight back. He saw an interesting flute seller outside his hotel. He had a pole with a lot of flutes on it and seemed like a porcupine body.

The flute seller kept playing his flutes and also did so in different tunes. But, what set him apart from the other flute sellers was that he played the flute thoughtfully. He did not scream to attract customers, he played it. This attracted the author and he wondered that flute is so common all over. Then, he compares it to the human voice and says how he is noticing even the little things now.

Moral of Kathmandu: To sum up, Kathmandu’s summary, we learn that we must all try and maintain the purity and serenity of the holy places and practice thoughtful actions.

विक्रम सेठ ने अपनी पुस्तक ‘हेवन लेक’ के अंश के माध्यम से नेपाल की राजधानी काठमांडू की अपनी यात्रा का वर्णन किया है। अपनी यात्रा के दौरान, उन्होंने दो मंदिरों का दौरा किया जहाँ नोटिस उनके बीच मतभेद पैदा करता है। एक मंदिर हिंदुओं के लिए, पशुपतिनाथ मंदिर का तीर्थ था।

उसके बाद, बौधनाथ मंदिर था जो बौद्धों के लिए है। उन्होंने नोटिस किया कि उन्होंने पशुपतिनाथ मंदिर में केवल हिंदुओं के लिए प्रवेश को प्रतिबंधित कर दिया। इस प्रकार, पर्यटकों, पुजारियों और तीर्थयात्रियों के बीच काफी अराजकता थी। इस सब को पूरा करने के लिए, लोग बागमती नदी को उसमें कपड़े धो कर, उसमें स्नान करके और उसमें सूखे फूलों को फेंककर प्रदूषित कर रहे थे।

उसके बाद, वह बौधनाथ मंदिर गए। उन्होंने देखा कि यहाँ का परिदृश्य पशुपतिनाथ मंदिर में जो कुछ भी देखा उससे बिल्कुल अलग था। इस बौद्ध मंदिर में एक विशाल गुंबद था जो सफेद रंग का है। वह जगह बहुत शांत और निर्मल थी। मंदिर के बाहर, एक तिब्बती बाजार था और लोग बैग, कपड़े, गहने और बहुत कुछ बेच रहे थे।

उन्होंने काठमांडू के धार्मिक स्थलों से लेकर कई पर्यटन स्थलों तक की कई चीजों पर ध्यान दिया। इसके अलावा, यह प्राचीन वस्तुओं, कैमरों, सौंदर्य प्रसाधन, चॉकलेट और अधिक की विभिन्न दुकानें भी हैं। बहरहाल, यह कार हॉर्न से संगीत और विक्रेताओं के लिए बहुत शोर वाला शहर भी है। उन्होंने शहर में एक मार्ज़िपन बार, मकई, कोका-कोला का आनंद लिया। उसके बाद, उन्होंने प्रेम कहानियों, कॉमिक्स और रीडर्स डाइजेस्ट पुस्तकों को भी पढ़ा।

दिल्ली लौटने पर, उन्होंने एक साहसिक रास्ता अपनाने के बारे में सोचा, जिसमें बस या ट्रेन की यात्रा और फिर नाव की सवारी शामिल है, लेकिन उन्होंने इस विचार को बहुत थका दिया था। इस प्रकार, उसने एक उड़ान वापस बुक की। उन्होंने अपने होटल के बाहर एक दिलचस्प बांसुरी विक्रेता को देखा। वह उस पर बहुत सारी बांसुरी के साथ एक पोल था और एक साही शरीर की तरह लग रहा था।

बांसुरी बेचने वाला अपनी बांसुरी बजाता रहता था और विभिन्न धुनों में भी ऐसा करता था। लेकिन, दूसरे बांसुरी बेचने वालों से अलग होने के कारण उन्होंने बांसुरी को सोच समझकर बजाया। वह ग्राहकों को आकर्षित करने के लिए चिल्लाया नहीं, उसने इसे खेला। इसने लेखक को आकर्षित किया और उसने सोचा कि बांसुरी सभी जगह बहुत आम है। फिर, वह इसकी तुलना मानव आवाज से करता है और कहता है कि वह अब छोटी चीजों को भी कैसे देख रहा है।
